How to Insert Footnotes or Endnotes

This article will guide you on how to properly insert footnotes or endnotes.

Footnotes and endnotes are useful tools that you can use if you wish to add extra information, references, or comments to your text. However, they can create confusion and inconsistency if they are not formatted and numbered properly.

Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page while endnotes can be found at the end of the manuscript.

Follow these simple steps to format and update these sometimes complicated references.

1. Click where you want to reference the footnote or endnote.

2. On the REFERENCES tab, select INSERT FOOTNOTE or INSERT ENDNOTE.

3. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote.

4. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

5. To edit the footnote options, right-click the note and select “Note options.” This will allow you to change the number that displays with the note, whether numbering restarts for each chapter or section, and so on. Word will automatically place endnotes at the end of the book.
