Help! I’m Stuck with Finding the Time to Write!

Finding the time to write can be one of our greatest challenges. It has the potential to hold us back … if we let it.

Many times we’re so wrapped up in our busy lives putting everyone else’s needs before our own, that we forget about the dreams desperately trying to ignite that fire in our hearts.

Everyone’s situation is unique and I’ve outlined some suggestions that will help you work through the challenges you’re facing. It’s time you make your dreams a priority and believe in the difference you are capable of making in this beautiful world.

It’s time to get your message out into the world. To be a difference maker.

#1 - Shift your mindset and words

Instead of saying... Say...
"I can't find the time to write!" "I need to make the time to write."

It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying, “I couldn’t find the time to do it,” or “Oh well, I ran out of time.” Most days we feel like we’re on a treadmill that’s going way too fast as we are forced to manage (and dodge) all the tasks being thrown our way. A simple shift of the words you use can make all the difference.

When I was writing my first book, I was also pregnant with my first child. I could have easily used that as an excuse to not follow through with my goals, but I shifted my perspective. My current challenges turned into my greatest motivation. My pregnancy wasn’t holding me back. It was motivating me to reach my goals quicker.

#2 - Read “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod

If you haven’t heard of this magical human yet, please do yourself a favor and read about him here. Go on … I can wait. But don’t forget to come back! Your dreams await!

His inspirational books are truly life changing. He teaches us how to create a morning routine that sets us up for success each day. You can adjust this routine to fit your schedule. It can last for an hour or it can be 6 minutes. Making the time to do this will result in peace and productivity.

#3 - Make a promise to yourself

Commit to your goals and hang them on a wall where you will see them everyday. You can even write and sign a self-written “contract” with set deadlines.

#4 - Hang up motivational quotes

Surround yourself with quotes (and people!) who lift you up, support you, motivate you, and encourage your dreams.

#5 - Schedule writing time in your calendar

Treat it the same way you would treat a doctor’s appointment. Don’t be late to it. If you miss it, reschedule it immediately. Choose how often you would like to write during the week and put it in your calendar so you know when it’s go time.

#6 - Develop writing habits

If writing in the morning is something that interests you, set your alarm for one hour earlier than usual and create a routine that includes your writing block. Establishing this routine will strengthen your writing muscle and develop positive habits that become automatic over time.

#7 - Eliminate distractions

In a world where distractions are coming at us from every angle, it’s important to learn how to eliminate them. Write in a place where you are able to fully focus, especially since time is of the essence. If your phone or other technology devices are distracting to you, keep them in a separate room.

#8 - Set time limits

Set a timer while you’re writing. Work with full focus for 30 minutes then take a break for 5 minutes. Then repeat.

Most importantly, do whatever it takes. Your dreams and your goals are worth the time you will spend on them.

I encourage you to take out your calendar right now and schedule your first writing appointment. Soon enough, you’ll be on your way to making the time to reach and achieve your goals!
